2023 20 Under 40 Farmer

Erick was caught by surprise when named an Illinois 20 Under 40 farmer. He feels very grateful for the recognition of the hard work he is pouring into the specialty crop industry. Erick is most excited for the 2024 crop year because he wants to continue to expand his specialty crops by planting pumpkins, and Christmas trees, as well as growing his agri-tourism business. In the next 5-10 years Erick hopes to put in an apple orchard for families to come pick apples on his farm. Additionally, he would like to build a storefront/bakery and a possible reception hall and vineyard/winery. He has big plans but is planning to take each new endeavor one step at a time. One lesson that Erick lives by is, never stop learning. He loves growing his business and attending trade shows to speak with exhibitors to learn about new technology. One of the most important things that has been instilled by former generations of farmers in Erick is a good work ethic. He has learned not to give up when things don’t go right the first time. Erick’s favorite part about farming is getting to spend time outdoors and work alongside his family. He finds the process of choosing what crops to grow every year, and educating the community about the various crop varieties and agricultural life to be very rewarding.
