USDA ANNOUNCES PANDEMIC ASSISTANCE FOR PRODUCERS

Last week, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced implementation of a four-part, $12 billion COVID-19 relief initiative, USDA Pandemic Assistance for Producers, which will establish new programs and efforts to bring financial assistance to producers affected by COVID-19 market disruptions. This includes expansion of existing COVID relief, reprogramming of unspent COVID funds, and implementation of relief enacted in December 2020. In some cases, rulemaking will be required, and in others, USDA will be expediting payment processing.

FOOD PANTRY CO-OP

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has created the Food Pantry Co-op to provide pork to food pantries, shelters, churches or groups in Illinois who strive to fight food insecurity in their local communities. The goal for this funding is to get quality protein further into small communities in our state, through existing organizations. The Illinois Pork Power Food Pantry Co-op Funding program will match up to $250 for the purchase of pork products. Eligible entities include churches, shelters, non-profit and for-profit organizations, soup kitchens and food pantries. If interested, please fill out the application here.

For further questions or to submit the co-op request form, email Casey Thiems at casey@ilpork.com or call (217) 529-3100.

Illinois farmer leader and ASA Director, Daryl Cates, provides an interesting account of the impact of March rain and the rising Mississippi levels, now above flood level, and what he plans to do once fields begin to dry in preparation for planting season.
