Running on Biodiesel
B20 biodiesel is a reliable, high-performance fuel that works in any diesel engine without modifications. To gain all the benefits of biodiesel, start with a quality product from a reliable fuel supplier. As with any fuel, follow best practices for storage.
Performance On The Road
Use biodiesel with confidence. Major U.S. vehicle manufacturers approve use of biodiesel blends up to 20 percent in diesel engines. Biodiesel offers consistent performance and contains higher cetane levels than regular diesel fuel for enhanced power.
Seek Out BQ-9000
All biodiesel must meet the ASTM D6751 standard to be legally sold at retail fueling stations. The National Biodiesel Accreditation Commission created a voluntary accreditation program – BQ-9000 – for biodiesel producers and marketers. Purchase biodiesel from companies with the BQ-9000 designation to ensure the highest quality fuel.
Biodiesel is an all-weather fuel, operating successfully in both summer and winter months. As with any fuel, proper treatment during cold weather is critical. There is no significant difference in cold-weather treatment between #2 diesel fuel and biodiesel blends up to B20.
Regardless of the fuel you use, storage tank maintenance is important for trouble-free operation. Avoid temperature extremes and keep water out of storage tanks. Water can corrode fuel systems and promote microbial growth that damages fuel quality. Prevent water condensation by keeping tanks full, especially when temperatures change from day to night. Use stainless steel, aluminum, Teflon® or fiberglass fuel storage tanks.
Cleaner Running Engines
With superior lubricity, biodiesel reduces engine wear and its solvent-like traits have engine cleaning abilities. Notice the reduced soot on these engine cylinders that have been running on B20 biodiesel.
No Maintenance Worries
Operating with biodiesel requires no engine modifications nor special maintenance. Service your diesel engine under the same schedule as when running on regular diesel fuel. In fact, your diesel mechanic will likely notice cleaner engine components with biodiesel.

BQ-9000 is a unique combination of the ASTM standard for biodiesel (ASTM D6751) and a voluntary quality systems program that includes storage, sampling, testing, blending, shipping, distribution and fuel management practices. It is open to any manufacturer, marketer or distributor of biodiesel and biodiesel blends in the United States and Canada.
