The Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy was finalized this summer. Growers and retailers alike will have to make plans to reduce nutrient losses in the future, working toward the goal of a 25 percent reduction in the state’s phosphorus load and a 15 percent reduction in the state’s nitrate-nitrogen load by 2025. The eventual target is a 45 percent reduction in the loss of these nutrients to the Mississippi River Basin. On September 9, Jean Payne and Dan Schaefer with the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association hosted an webinar to discuss the NLRS, the 4R systems and what growers can do on their farms.
