Soyfoods

Did you know that the soy heart health claim might have never seen the light of day without the Illinois Soybean Association and the Checkoff?

In 1999, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that incorporating soy protein into the daily diet helps fight coronary heart disease—the number one cause of death in the U.S.—and authorized the use of this health claim on food packages meeting the FDA's guidelines for soy protein.

The Checkoff Board led the charge, researching the information for the health claim, while soybean farmers lobbied through the Illinois Soybean Association. What resulted was the first industry-wide claim not specific to one branded product (such as oats).

Now delicious, good-for-you soyfoods are everywhere, from your local grocery store to school cafeterias across Illinois!
