Rust Watchers
Since Asian soybean rust was first discovered in the U.S., we've all heard the stories about this potentially devastating disease. This year, help us help you and countless other Illinois soybean growers—become a Rust Watcher.
Here are some things to remember:
- Early detection of rust is essential, so frequent scouting and tracking of the disease's progression is necessary for effective treatment.
- If you suspect rust in your field, follow the Illinois Soybean Rust Action Plan, which calls for you to collect 20 suspect leaves, place them between dry paper towels, and put them into a sample bag. Deliver the sample bag to your local Extension office immediately for processing through the University of Illinois' Distance Diagnostics through Digital Imaging system. If the sample requires further testing, the Checkoff will assume the cost of that test.
- Losses from Asian soybean rust are only covered by crop insurance if you follow “best management practices” for combating the disease. Be sure to discuss this with your insurance agent.
