Transportation
Exporting Local Grains via Container from an Illinois River Agricultural Hub (10-25-2010) This study looked at historical and current container shipments out of Illinois and the potential of agricultural products for backhaul in containers back to Asia. Scenario analysis was conducted looking at the different options and costs for shipping containerized product from Beardstown to Asia. These options included: COB from Beardstown to Chicago, rail/truck to Chicago, transload at Chicago, and finally COB to the gulf and transfer to an international vessel for export.
Capitalizing on Containers (10-25-2010) The primary purpose of this report is to shine some light on the business of containerized exports of Illinois agricultural products – particularly corn, soybeans, and DDGS. This is a comparatively young, niche business that appears to be growing larger year by year. And it is a business that holds promise for farmers, the railintermodal and trucking industries, agricultural exporters – even to a small degree our country’s balance of trade. Many people in the farm and transportation sectors have begun to take notice. They are asking, “What exactly is going on?” And, “How can we participate and benefit?” Likewise, state and local governments are taking notice; and it was due to the collaboration of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and the City of Rochelle that the work represented here was accomplished.
Container Security (10-20-2010) In January 2002, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) initiated the Container Security Initiative (CSI) to address the threat that terrorists might use maritime cargo containers to ship weapons of mass destruction. Under CSI, CBP is to target and inspect high-risk cargo shipments at foreign seaports before they leave for destinations in the United States. In July 2003, GAO reported that CSI had management challenges that limited its effectiveness. Given these challenges and in light of plans to expand the program, GAO examined selected aspects of the program’s operation, including the (1) factors that affect CBP’s ability to target shipments at foreign seaports, (2) extent to which highrisk containers have actually been inspected overseas, and (3) extent to which CBP formulated and documented strategies for achieving the program’s goals.

Economic Impacts of Biodiesel Production on the Soybean Sector, Revisited (2-3-2011) A 2009 study funded by the United Soybean Board's Domestic Marketing Committee explored the financial impact biodiesel had on farmers' bottom lines. This report takes another look at those figures to assess what impact, if any, the lapse of the biodiesel tax exemption could have had on farms and shows that biodiesel continues to contribute positively to the soybean industry.

Two Species of Symbiotic Bacteria Present in the Soybean Aphid (1-14-2010) ABSTRACT Aphids, which feed solely on plant phloem sap, have developed symbiotic associations with bacteria that provide them with the amino acids that are lacking in phloem. Three soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Mat samura) populations were screened for the presence of Buchnera aphidicola and three common species of secondary aphid symbionts (Serratia symbiotica, Hamiltonella defensa, and Regiella insecticola). Diagnostic polymerase chain reaction and subsequent DNA sequencing showed the presence of two species of symbiotic bacteria present in all three soybean aphid populations tested: B. aphidicola and Arsenophonus sp. Although Buchnera is commonly found in aphids, Arsenophonus is most commonly found in whiteßies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), making the soybean aphid unique among aphids that have been tested for the presence of Arsenophonus.
Pathogenic Variation of Phakopsora pachyrhizi Infecting Soybean in Nigeria (1-14-2010) Soybean rust, caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is an important disease in Nigeria and many other soybean-producing countries worldwide.
To determine the geographical distribution of soybean rust in Nigeria, soybean fields were surveyed in the Derived Savanna (DS), Northern Guinea Savanna (NGS), and Southern Guinea Savanna (SGS) agroecological zones in Nigeria between 2004 and 2006. Disease severity in each zone was determined and analyzed using geostatistics.
Effect of Fungicide and Timing of Application on Soybean Rust Severity and Yield (1-14-2010) Soybean rust, caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is a devastating foliar disease of soybean that may cause significant yield losses if not managed by well-timed fungicide applications. To determine the effect of fungicide timing on soybean rust severity and soybean yield, field trials were completed in Paraguay (four locations), the United States (two locations), and Zimbabwe (one location) from 2005 to 2006.
EVALUATION OF AGGRESSIVENESS OF FUSARIUM VIRGULIFORME ISOLATES THAT CAUSE SOYBEAN SDS (1-12-2010) Fusarium virguliforme (Akoi, O’Donnell, Homma & Lattanzi), formerly named F. solani (Mart.) Sacc. f.sp. glycines, is the cause of soybean sudden death syndrome (SDS). Over the last 6 years, an international collection of F. virguliforme isolates has been established and maintained at the National Soybean Pathogen Collection Center, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
