The Illinois Soybean Association (ISA)is sponsoring a soy foods cooking competition at the Illinois State Fair on August 18. The fun and educational contest will be held at the Hobby, Arts and Crafts Building on the State Fairgrounds in Springfield, IL.
Funded by the soybean checkoff, the competitive cooking competition will demonstrate the diversity and nutritional value soy adds to any recipe. To qualify, dishes must be prepared with soy as a dominant ingredient, which can include tofu, whole soybeans, soy flour, textured vegetable protein, and soy protein isolate or soy protein. Judging criteria for the entries will be based on taste, ease of preparation, nutrition, presentation and ingenuity.
Soy dishes will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on August 18, with judging starting immediately after. Those competing have the opportunity to win cash prizes – $100 for first place, $80 for second place, or $60 for third place. These premiums will be paid by the ISA and announced at 12:15 p.m. A cooking demonstration will cap off the competition at 4:15 p.m.
