Soybean Farmer-Leaders Meet with Congressmen, Senators
BLOOMINGTON, ILL. - July 26, 2010 - Five Illinois Soybean Association board members from throughout the state recently met with Illinois legislators as part of the American Soybean Association (ASA) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. July 14.
"This was a great opportunity to talk to decision-makers and let them know why certain issues, such as the Farm Bill, Biodiesel Tax Extension and Free Trade Agreements, are important to our soybean farmers and the ag industry," said ISA Chairman Ron Moore of Roseville. "It is vital for us to share our priorities and let the legislators know first-hand how their decisions affect soybean farmers."
Moore and Cunningham were joined by fellow board members and soybean farmers Ron Kindred of Atlanta, Dan Farney of Morton, and CW Gaffner of Greenville. ASA DuPont Young Leaders Mark and Sherri Kannmacher, ISA CEO Lyle Roberts, Legislative Affairs Director Mike Levin and Communications Manager Amy Roady also accompanied the group.
They met with Congressmen Tim Johnson, John Shimkus, Aaron Schock, Mark Kirk , Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson, Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Roland Burris.
"This is just one way our association serves Illinois farmers and represents their interests in Washington D.C. and Springfield," said ISA Vice Chairman Mike Cunningham of Bismarck. "Also, during the legislative sessions this year, we gave input on numerous bills, which was complemented by our Hill visits."
The Illinois farmers also discussed international trade, aquaculture, FY-11 appropriations, energy bills and climate changes.
