Illinois livestock producers are facing increasing regulations and the animal agriculture sector is contracting. What does this mean for the state's soybean farmers?
Illinois ranks second in soybean production but 16th in soybean meal use. A look at soybean meal use in Illinois shows that pork production accounts for 82 percent. Yet, since 2000, hog numbers in Illinois have grown at half the rate of the national average, and beef and dairy declines significantly outpaced the U.S. as a whole. As Illinois soybean farmers, we need to support a healthy livestock sector not only to help ensure a market for our soybeans but also to strengthen our local and state economies. For each dollar of output created by the Illinois livestock industry, an additional 88 cents is created outside of the industry. It's an economic engine for communities and our state, making significant contributions to local economies, employment and tax revenues. Stand Up and Get Involved
