Clean School Bus Program

Clean School Bus Program

The Illinois Clean School Bus Program is an important initiative that aims to make the environment cleaner and healthier for Illinois schoolchildren. To achieve this goal, we need to lower particulate matter (PM) and other harmful emissions that come from school buses powered by diesel engines.

What does that have to do with soybeans? A 20 percent biodiesel blend (made from soybeans) may reduce lung-damaging PM by as much as 10 percent!

Biodiesel-powered school buses also:

  • Reduce cancer-causing hydrocarbons and poisonous carbon monoxide emissions
  • Burn cleaner, lowering exhaust levels inside where the children sit
  • Improve lubricity and performance, minimize downtown and lower maintenance costs
  • Maintain similar fuel economy, horsepower and torque as petroleum diesel

Several Illinois school districts, colleges and mass transit systems are already using biodiesel. The Greater Peoria Mass Transit District unveiled its B20-powered CitiLink buses in November of 2010 - read this press release to learn more. If your school district hasn't made the change to biodiesel, contact your superintendent.
